personality

Strengths:
- Kind: Subaru is repeatedly referred to as kind throughout the manga as he strives to selflessly help others in his work (exorcism). Subaru often endangers himself to aid others, one example being when he dream-walks into a dangerous situation in a young girl's dream but doesn't retaliate against her visions in fear that doing so will damage her mind. Another example is when he offers to help a company undergoing suspicious (and paranormal) accidents and when told to leave with his payment he refuses, insisting that he values helping others over monetary gains.
- Merciful: In his work, Subaru is faced with a great variety of adversaries most of wish want to kill him. Regardless of their motives, he makes an effort not only to not kill his enemies but to help them. Sometimes, this tender-hearted tendency means that he holds back when fighting which has often left him worse off than his enemies. While being merciful could easily be seen as a flaw, since Subaru has never taken a life this means he's untarnished by murder or death.
- Deference: Often criticised by his twin sister for being overly polite Subaru shows respect for others of all ages and backgrounds. Often taking the blame for things that are not his fault or going so far as to bow to someone he's speaking to on the phone. It's unclear if this was part of his upbringing in Kyoto or his training in Tokyo but he goes to great length not to offend others so much so that he refrains from asking others their motives, opinions etc. less they volunteer it or he's close to them.
- Modesty: As the head of the Sumeragi clan Subaru not only has a great deal of power but also responsibility, however, he refers to himself as a "simple onmyōji" (exorcist). He is never found to brag or show off his abilities and when forced to use them he does so modestly.
- Onmyōjistu: Subaru has a number of abilities he's able to manipulate because of his onmyōji training. He's able to summon shikigami, which is similar to a witche's familiar that can protect and serve him, in the form of big three-headed raven. He's able to create psywaves as bullets or shields and can perform rites and chants to communicate with spirits. Subaru is able to enter into somebody's mind, which can be very painful, causing him real injuries; but can be used to talk to people in comatose and bring them back to reality.
Flaws:
- Naive: By far his biggest flaw is Subaru's naivety. He trusts people without question and although he has the ability to empathise with others he rarely spots the danger in them until it's too late. The greatest and most devastating example of this is his relationship with Seishirou. Over the course of a year Seishirou and Subaru grow very close, despite Seishirou's hints to his dark past and intentions. It's until Seishirou clearly illustrates who he is and his deadly plans that Subaru, disbelievingly, releases how someone he loves has deceived him. The shock of this revelation puts Subaru into a coma.
- Clumsy: On a lighter note, Subaru is extremely clumsy. He bumps into people whilst not paying attention to where he's going and on one occasion he trips over his own feet when pursuing his shikigami (familiar). Most of the time his clumsiness seems to be a result of his mind wandering or him not fully concentrating, which could also relate to some ideas that he can be, at times, a bit scatterbrained.
- Shy: In connection to his overly polite manner Subaru is also extremely shy and even bashful around others. The clearest example of this is when Seishirou flirts with him about the two of them 'getting married', at which point Subaru usually blushes and overreactions; shaking his head and vocally objecting to such notions.
- Poor constitution: Subaru seems to have a weak constitution as he regularly faints during the series. Most notably was when he saw the dead body Seishirou was dealing with when he was a child but even as an adult he regularly passes out when he sees something gruesome. This is never really explained during Tokyo Babylon but judging by the rest of his personality it may be a self-preservation mechanism to stop himself from reacting rashly when faced with violence.

- Abilities: As mentioned above, Subaru has his onmyōji abilities.
- Likes: Hokuto and Seishirou, animals (particularly dogs), sweet food, green tea
- Dislikes: Dishonesty, cruelty, rudeness, vulgarity

game plans

Starting Faction: The Empress
Goals: As my other character (lucutio) is so dark and intense I'd like Subaru to be a positive and cheerful character to balance my writing. In terms of relationships the ideal relationship for him would be a Seishirou-style mentor who could guide him through the difficult times in the game but really I'd just like to play him out and see where he ends up.
